The Importance of Martial Arts Etiquette

Martial arts training isn’t just throwing on a uniform, tying a belt and hitting the mats. There is an important etiquette and respect that must be given not only to the instructors and your fellow students but the dojo itself.

Proper bowing, sitting, counting and learning the essential commands and language is important when you’re training. In many cases it’s for your safety because we don’t want anyone getting hurt, but it’s also about learning essential discipline for your training that can also be carried over into your everyday life.

How Iaido Training Can Improve Your Fitness

In a previous post we took a look at how Iaido’s “Downward Cut” training drills could help improve your technique and strength for men and women fitness in Ann Arbor. In this post we’re doing a follow-up and showing how practicing a couple of different Iaido moves with resistance bands can help you improve strength and technique at the same time.

First: Nukitsuke
This is the very important motions in drawing your sword or bokken during Iaido training. Watch this video to see two very important techniques for both the right and left side of your body that not only help you clear your scabbard but also cleanly draw your sword using strength and power instead of joint reflexes.

Second: The Overhead Block
This next move is a sort of follow-up move you can do after the Nukitsuke. Again, it revolves around using strength and power with strong follow through to empower your movements and not simply using shoulder and elbow joint movements.

Jujutsu Self-Defense Techniques

Are you looking for classes that teach techniques for self-defense in Ann Arbor? At Japanese Martial Arts Center, we offer specialized training in Judo, Karate, and traditional Nihon Jujutsu that encompass real-world self-defense techniques as well as personal development.

Many Ann Arbor self-defense classes only teach the basic moves, strikes, punches, or kicks but they lack the mental approach that readies you for conflict situations. The physical attack response should always be the last resort, but with regular martial arts training at JMAC, we help you develop ways of deescalating and avoiding situations that could potentially be harmful.
