Getting the Most from Your At-Home Workout

Many of us are working out at home during the emergency shutdown. We've compiled a list of tips to help you get the most out of your workout!

·     Dress for success! Put on your martial arts uniform before you practice. If you’re doing our at-home bootcamp exercise, put on whatever athletic wear you’d normally wear to the gym. It might seem silly if you’re not at the dojo, but by putting on the uniform, you’re telling yourself that this time you’re setting aside is special. If you’ve just been sitting around in your sweats all day, it makes a big difference to change into your uniform!

COVID-19 and New Online Offerings

JMAC is implementing the new offerings across a variety of platforms: Facebook, Zoom, and Thinkific.

More traditional lessons are being offered live over Zoom, and Thinkific is hosting a growing archive of lessons. Short JMAC 18 clips are also being offered over Facebook—be sure to check them out if you’re looking for a great bootcamp workout in Ann Arbor!

The aim is to reach both newcomers and serve current students during these disruptions.

Check out our website for more on how we’re changing!

JMAC is adapting to COVID-19!

Of course, we’re not alone in meeting the challenge of COVID-19.

Many services that were once only imaginable in-person have changed nearly over night.

Some notable local examples include:
·       The Ann Arbor public library offering virtual story time
·       Pure Michigan’s “virtual vacations”
·       Local business networks offering virtual power lunches

JMAC realized early on that COVID-19 was not going to mean business as usual and has been a leader in the Ann Arbor martial arts community in innovating fitness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

KEEP READING about how we’re adapting to better serve our students!

Have you ever wanted to train in martial arts?
You're never too old - or too young - to start!

One of the most important aspects of martial arts training is that it’s for everyone. It doesn’t matter what gender you are – and it certainly doesn’t matter how old you are – you can still benefit from training in karate, judo, jujutsu or iaido! Dalton Schotte, our latest I Am JMAC profile, is a perfect example. In 2014, at 7 years old, Dalton started training in Karate. Now, as a young man, he’s still training, still learning, and still growing as a person.

Japanese Jujutsu Classes in Ann Arbor

Japanese Jujutsu Classes in Ann Arbor, MI

If you’re looking for Japanese jujutsu in Ann Arbor, JMAC is your top choice. Suino-Sensei started JMAC in 2006 with the help of a handful of investors. The dojo quickly became a place for serious but joyful martial arts training. You can choose from several legitimate Japanese martial arts systems and train with a group of dedicated, safe, thoughtful people who work on improving themselves in every class.

Jujutsu is an amazing combination of physical skill and mental achievement. The techniques are organized around sets of principles. There are a lot of these movements, but they’re not unlimited, so you can master them over time and become very skilled at takedowns, throws, pins, chokes and submissions.

The best way to get a feel for jujutsu training at JMAC is to come to watch a class. If you like what you see, you can sign up for your two free intro lessons. You’ll learn the etiquette, safe falling skills, and the basic stepping and defensive movements. When you sign up for a trial membership, you’ll be prepared to make it through the class. From there on, it’s all uphill!

Japanese Jujutsu Classes in Ann Arbor - JMAC

Looking for a place to train in Japanese Jujutsu in Ann Arbor, MI?

Japanese Martial Arts Center has some of the best instructors & students to train with.

In 1988, armed with a master's degree in English and a few dollars, Nicklaus Suino set out for Tokyo. After a 14-hour flight, a 2-hour train ride, and a 20-minute ride in a friend’s Nissan, he arrived in time for dinner, a beer, and a long night’s sleep!

One of the first things he did was reach out to Sato Shizuya, the leader of a martial arts system called “Nihon Jujutsu.” The words mean “Japanese Self-Defense Art.” Suino and his longtime friend John Gage trained with Sato-Sensei at the Judo Club located within the American Embassy Housing Compound. They often attended classes three times a week, spending as long as 8-10 hours training on Saturdays before venturing into the nightlife district of Roppongi.

Self-Defense Classes at Japanese Martial Arts Center

Want to learn sound self-defense skills?
Come visit our Dojo!

“I knew JMAC was the right place for me after my first intro lesson. Suino Sensei was super nice and happy and made me feel really comfortable and accepted. I decided that I wanted to train at a place where I was always happy to be there and so was everyone else,” says Catharina.

At JMAC we train students in Karate, Judo, Nihon Jujutsu, and Iaido (Japanese Swordsmanship).
There are a lot of self-defense classes out there. Most of them do offer some good advice and procedures to avoid confrontation. Not all of them train the body as well as the mind to handle these difficult situations. Self-defense is a life skill. To get the most out of the training, you need to be willing and comfortable. If you’re not comfortable with the style of training or the personality of the instructor – you’re not going to get everything you should out of the lessons.

Can you remember where you were 13 years ago?

We opened the doors to the Japanese Martial Arts Center in early June 2006! Just recently we celebrated our 13th anniversary with an open house event showcasing our students in action performing real-time martial arts – sparring, drilling, and showing what they’ve learned with lots of hard work and dedication!

As we say in our mission statement, our greatest assets are our extraordinary instructors and passionate students. We focus on lifetime learning and enthusiastic teaching in an energetic, joyful dojo. Our never-ending commitment to improving and our active connection with Japan builds exceptional technique and refined character.

At JMAC we opened our doors 13 years ago and, in that time, we’ve taught countless students. You’re free to come in and observe a class and if you’d like, you can sign up for two free lessons!
